Kus: Caves, Gorges and Regional Specialties

Kus is located in an area where caves, gorges, river landscapes and regional products are closely interconnected. The Gryka e Skoranës is particularly striking: the canyon was formed by river erosion in limestone along the middle course of the Erzen, near Shpella e Zezë and Pëllumbas. In the vicinity of Kus, the gorge is approximately 1 km long, over 120 m deep and about 20 m wide. On its left slope, a large karst spring emerges a few dozen meters below Shpella e Zezë.

Natural Environment

Kus belongs to the administrative unit of Bërzhitë. It contains two mountain areas and a valley; overall, the landscape is predominantly hilly and also includes fields, mountains and valleys. In more densely vegetated areas, wolves, foxes, wild boars, hares, martens, quails, partridges and turtle doves are among the animals found. The landscape of the administrative unit also includes the tourist destination of Shpella e Pëllumbasit on the Erzen River, which is surrounded by fields.

The cave itself also has precise spatial characteristics: Shpella e Zezë is approximately 360 m long, 10–15 m wide and 15–45 m high. Its interior contains stalactites and stalagmites. In the vicinity of Kus, an approximately 2 km-long, scenic hiking trail also runs through an impressive gorge landscape above the Erzen River to the entrance of Pëllumbas Cave.

Culture and History

Shpella e Zezë is also known as Shpella e Pëllumbasit and was declared a natural monument in 2002. Pëllumbas Cave was later used by early humans as a settlement site during the Middle Paleolithic. In Pëllumbas, Bërzhitë, Shpella e Pëllumbasit is listed as a Category I cultural monument.

Trails and Regional Experiences

In the vicinity of Kus, Gryka e Skoranës can be visited via the approximately 27 km-long Tiranë–Ibë–Pëllumbas road. Another hiking route leads from Pëllumbas to waterfalls along the Erzen River. In Bërzhitë, the Pjateli shooting facility has two shooting ranges for the disciplines of Skeet, Universal Trap, Percorso di Caccia, Olympic Trap and Double Trap.

Roads and Location

The Kocaj–Ura Kakunjë road section is important for local traffic conditions. It is largely unpaved, while the existing asphalt surface is damaged. At the same time, this section is the only through route for Kus, Lugë and Shalqizë. In Bërzhitë, which includes Kus, the built-up area lies on both sides of the Tiranë–Elbasan national road.

Regional Cuisine and Products

In the vicinity of Kus, the Shpella e Pëllumbave restaurant serves chicken with pilaf as a traditional dish and produces two types of raki there itself. The Sallaku restaurant in Bërzhitë serves traditional dishes and uses products from the region.
