Orikum between Lagoon, Sandy Beach and Ancient History

Orikum preserves the atmosphere of a coastal settlement whose life is connected with the sea, traditional agriculture—including olive trees and vineyards—and fishing. Between the coast, archaeological traces and protected landscapes, the town reveals different sides that can be discovered on individual excursions and walks.

Culture

The Marmiroi Church was built in the 12th century. Its architecture is characterized by a centrally vaulted design and an interior cruciform floor plan. As a legally protected cultural monument, it is visited by tourists. A path connects the Marmiroi Church with Bristan Bay; it is 8,170 metres long, takes 1 hour and 50 minutes, and is of medium difficulty.

The ancient city of Orikum, also known as Orikos, was founded around the 6th century BC. The Oriku Archaeological Park contains the ruins of a square monopteros building from the 3rd to 2nd century BC. The ancient theatre there had seating for approximately 500 to 600 spectators. A tower from Late Antiquity also stands on the eastern terrace of the park.

Nature

The Orikum Archaeological Park lies between the sea and the Karaburun Mountains. The route from the Marmiroi Church to Bristan Bay is also located within the managed Karaburun protected area in Vlorë District.

The Orikum Lagoon lies on the coast of Vlora Bay near the town of Orikum. It is part of the managed Karaburun protected area and is considered an Important Bird Area (IBA). Visitors can observe birds there with binoculars, especially in spring and autumn during migration. They can also walk along the shore and take photographs.

Coast

Orikum Beach is located near the archaeological site of Orikum and the marina. It has soft sand and a gently sloping entrance into the sea.
