Culture and history

Shahumyan is home to an open-air museum. Founded in 1991 by Grigor Hakobi Aslanyan, the Shahumyan Open-Air Museum includes a chapel, displays historical household items and tools, and resembles an ancient settlement. It welcomes visitors from Armenia and abroad.

The Church of the Holy Mother of God is also part of the history of the area. Its older basilica was built in the 1860s. The church was renovated in 2007, when a dome and a matagh house were added. It was consecrated again on April 5, 2009.

Landscape

Shahumyan lies amid the flat fields of the Ararat Plain. Mount Ararat rises above the plain southwest of Shahumyan. Vineyards and orchards are cultivated around Shahumyan; apricots and grapes are also grown there.
