Culture

The Neghuts complex consists of a church, an adjoining gavit, and a separate small chapel. Neghuts Monastery was built in the 10th or 11th century. The preserved Saint Astvatsatsin Church in Neghuts is incomplete: three walls are still standing, while the south wall has collapsed. The monastery includes a domed church without columns. On an individual tour, Neghuts Monastery is the final stop.

An inscription in Neghuts mentions the year 1451; other inscriptions date from the 13th to the 15th century. Neghuts Church is surrounded by house foundations and khachkars. Near the center of Arzakan stands the 12th-century Saint Mary Astvatsatsin Church, which is partially dilapidated. At the northern edge of Arzakan, Saint Gevorg Church stands in a cemetery; it is built of black tuff and basalt.

Historically, Arzakan had three smithies, three weaving mills, a carpentry workshop, and a wool-processing workshop. Every August, Arzakan holds a pilgrimage celebration at Saint Astvatsatsin Monastery.

Landscape

Arzakan Monastery stands on an isolated, forested high hill between the branches of the Neghos Gorge.

Hiking

The Aghveran Loop is a five-hour hike that begins in Arzakan and leads from Kotayk to Aragatsotn. The route passes through the volcanic Tsaghkunyats Mountains and reaches Lake Tsaghkunyats. For winter hikers, it is advisable to bring snowshoes, check snow and weather conditions, and take the avalanche risk into account.
