Makovišča is considered a settlement in the southern part of the Białowieża Forest; the local tourist center is 8 km away.

The Białowieża Forest World Heritage Site comprises lowland forests characteristic of the Central European terrestrial ecoregion of mixed forests. The area protects diverse and species-rich wildlife; the European bison is its iconic symbol.

Near Makovišča lies the Białowieża Forest, a large forest complex on the border between Poland and Belarus. Thanks to several periods of protection, it has remained in its natural state to this day.

The “Animal Crossing” hiking trail runs along the southern border of the forest near Makovišča. It passes through forest sections, clearings, floodplain areas, and a marsh; 30% of the route runs on a paved surface and 70% on an unpaved path.

Routes and culture

Near Makovišča, the “Tsar’s Meadow” cycling route is 10 km long, easy, and designed to take around 1.5 hours. The Pererov–Białowieża National Park cycling route is 45 km long.

Tsar’s Meadow is a forest clearing that has existed for several centuries and is historically associated with a hunting festival held by the Polish-Lithuanian king Stanisław August Poniatowski. Today, mass events and festivals are held there.

The Pererov–Białowieża National Park cycling route passes Lake Lyadskoje, which is listed as one of the route’s attractions. Tsar’s Road, also listed as one of the route’s attractions, is located along this route as well.

Practical information

Near Makovišča, the national park is served by minibuses and buses operating on the Brest–Kamenets–Kamenyuki route.

No permit is required for the “Зубровка” estate or the tourist area of the Białowieża Forest; the roads in Makovišča are also considered to be good.

Near Makovišča, the “Беловежская пуща” restaurant offers Belarusian and European cuisine, as well as a wide selection of specialties made with game, berries, and mushrooms.

Accommodation

The “Деревенский рай” estate offers bicycle rental. Its grounds include a children’s complex and a sports field. The estate is located on the edge of the forest; the official entrance to Białowieża Forest National Park is 7 km away.

At “Домик в Пуще”, a rate including pool access provides guests with a heated outdoor pool measuring 5.5 m in diameter, with a water temperature of 26 °C. The pool operates from June 1 to September 15.

At “Домик в Пуще”, excursions to the Wild Swamp and individual tours into the nature reserve with an experienced guide can be organized. This is available upon request and for groups of two or more people.
