Gradačac: Stari grad, Hazna Lake and hotels
Gradačac combines a significant historical ensemble with a lake close to the city, archaeological collections and its own culinary specialty. At the center is Stari grad Gradačac, a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The complex includes fortification walls, the upper town with the tower of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević, as well as the lower town with the clock tower, city library, museum, radio station and grammar school. The complex was built in 1756 on the site of the gradačačka palanka.
Culture and history
The clock tower of Gradačac was built in 1824 by Husein-kapetan Gradaščević. The Gradaščević family house is also part of the history of the town: Osman Gradaščević had it built in 1786, and in November 2015 it was declared a national monument. The tower of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević, also known as Bijela kula, is a defining landmark of Gradačac. Its čardak offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding area.
The “Ahmed Muradbegović” Cultural Center regularly hosts the “Gradačački književni susreti” as well as cultural entertainment events during the “Sajam šljive”.
The Zavičajna Museum Collection displays artifacts from the Paleolithic to the end of the Ottoman period that were found in the area of the municipality of Gradačac and in Bosanska Posavina. The collection includes Stone Age artifacts approximately 100,000 years old, as well as artifacts from the Neolithic period dating back around 7,000 years. These include finds from the Starčevo and Vinča cultures.
Water and landscape
Hazna Lake is located in the immediate vicinity of Gradačac city center. It was created in 1967 after the Hazna River and Lake Vidara flooded Gradačac in 1964 and 1967. Its creation is therefore also part of the more recent history of the town.
Hazna Lake is suitable for walking, camping, barbecuing, recreation and fishing. These various uses coexist around the same body of water and range from a walk to longer stays outdoors.
Regional cuisine
Gradačačka kutija is a local dish made from meat and vegetables that has been prepared and served in Gradačac for more than 40 years. The restaurant in the tower of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević serves Bosnian dishes and grilled specialties. In this way, local food culture and the tower’s historical setting come together in the town.
