Lukavac – Cultural Monuments, Railway Line and Lake Modrac

Lukavac combines historic buildings, Lake Modrac and an international trade fair programme with clearly identifiable links to culture, railways and regional themes. Vila Solvay, the Crkva Sv. Ante Padovanskog with its parish house, and the Stara Željeznička stanica represent different periods in the town’s history. This range is complemented by Lake Modrac, located within the municipality, and the “LIST” trade fair.

Culture and History

Vila Solvay in Lukavac was built in 1911/1912. It was originally intended as a healthcare facility rather than a residential building. Since November 2015, it has had the status of a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The building therefore combines its original function with a later significance under heritage protection law.

Another protected ensemble consists of the Catholic church Crkva Sv. Ante Padovanskog and the parish house in Lukavac. Both buildings were designed by Karl Paržik and Florijan Strauss. The Crkva Sv. Ante Padovanskog was built from 1928 to 1930. The group of buildings comprising the church and parish house was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the session held from 4 to 6 November 2015.

The historic building stock also includes the Stara Željeznička stanica. It is considered the oldest surviving infrastructure building in Lukavac from the Austro-Hungarian period and dates from 1894. It was built on the narrow-gauge Doboj–Simin Han railway line, whose construction was completed by 29 April 1886.

Geographical Location

The Stara Željeznička stanica is located at Prva ulica 3, south of the centre of Lukavac. Lukavac lies on the Tuzla–Doboj railway line.

In the municipality of Lukavac, in the village of Modrac, Lake Modrac was created in 1964 through the construction of a dam on the Spreča River. Its creation is therefore clearly connected in terms of timing and construction with this dam project.

Events

The “LIST” trade fair brings together tourism, ecology, gastronomy and entrepreneurship. These four subject areas jointly represent an event profile that combines tourism, ecological, culinary and economic aspects.

The 24th International Tourism and Ecology Fair “LIST” was ceremonially opened in Lukavac. The fair’s programme also included the food and drink festival “Bosanska sofra”.
