Hotels in Tuzla amid salt lakes and salt history

In the city centre of Tuzla lies the Panonska Lakes complex. The facility consists of salt lakes with a bathing area and beach and also serves as a recreation and sports centre. This place also has a historical connection: at the end of September 2008, Slani slapovi was established within the Panonska Lakes complex as an open-air inhalation health centre.

Culture and history

Tuzla’s salt history goes back a long way. The Archaeological Park featuring the Neolithic pile-dwelling settlement is an open-air museum and conveys part of Tuzla’s archaeological and historical past. At the same time, the park also presents the earliest salt production in the Neolithic period. Another museum-tourist complex is located on Soni Trg. The remains of the main salt well used during Ottoman rule have been preserved there and are open to visitors. A museum exhibition on Soni Trg displays finds from the Neolithic period and other historical eras that were discovered at sites in and around Tuzla.

The reconstructed Baroka building from the Austro-Hungarian period is located on Trg Slobode. The square is designed for socialising and various events. At the same time, Trg Slobode is the largest square in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Pannonica geological exhibition adds a natural-science element: it displays around 100 minerals and 120 fossils. The exhibits include a Turalis-turis fossil, which is characteristic of the area where the Pannonian Sea once lay. Pannonica also displays the mineral Tuzlait, described as the only mineral in the world found in Tuzla’s salt deposits.

Events

Tuzla’s cultural programme also includes multi-day events. Kaleidoskop is a four-day art event in Tuzla featuring young artists from the region and Europe. The programme includes exhibitions, film screenings, live performances, workshops, talks, concerts, and photography and art activities. As part of Cum Grano Salis, the “Meša Selimović” Prize is awarded for the best novel published in the previous year in the linguistic area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro.
