Cazin: Old Town, Chestnuts and Culture
Historic Cazin around Stari grad
The Stari grad Cazin old town is situated on a hill above the present-day city of Cazin. The courtyard of the old town has a trapezoidal medieval layout. The city mosque stands within the walls; it was built in 1879 and ceremonially reopened on November 2, 1883, after its restoration. The Stari grad Cazin old town and its mosque were declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2005.
In the center of Cazin, the house of Ibro Alagić is located behind the municipal administration building. The Stari grad Cazin old town and its mosque are about 100 meters away in a straight line on a nearby hill. The house of Ibro Alagić is considered one of the oldest residential buildings in Cazin. Based on its construction method, the materials used and the workmanship of its structural elements, its construction is dated to the first half of the 19th century during Ottoman rule.
Nurija and Devleta Pozderac hid persecuted Jews in the house of Ibro Alagić. In 2012, Yad Vashem posthumously awarded Nurija and Devleta Pozderac the title of Righteous Among the Nations for this. Josip Broz Tito visited the head of the household at Nurija Pozderac's house. Thus, several specific memorial sites form part of Cazin's history, without having the same historical role.
Kula Radetina Natural Monument
Kula Radetina near Cazin is a medieval and Ottoman fortification in a natural setting with a cave and the Radetina stream. Kula Radetina, the Radetina stream and the surrounding natural heritage together form a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kula Radetina is located on steep, difficult-to-access terrain. Its entrance is practically inaccessible because the former access corridor has since been destroyed.
Art and Events in Ostrožac
The “Ostrožac” Sculpture Colony takes place in June as an open-air sculpture workshop at the Stari grad Ostrožac old town. The Stari grad Ostrožac old town hosts historical and contemporary art exhibitions, which are often accompanied by educational programs. An open-air cinema is also held every year at the Stari grad Ostrožac old town, where visitors watch film screenings on the old stone walls.
Chestnuts and Local Products
The ChestNUT Fest in Cazin celebrates the chestnut as a native plant species of the region. At the ChestNUT Fest, exhibitors and professional chefs prepare culinary specialties. Sporting and recreational activities at the ChestNUT Fest lead into the surrounding chestnut forests.
In 2010, the beekeepers' association of the Municipality of Cazin launched chestnut honey on the market under its own brand as a protected product of controlled origin and quality. The Cazinski sajam includes a festival of local products such as honey, milk and medicinal herbs. At “Lito moje medeno,” visitors can sample local products and get to know local producers. For several years, “Lito moje medeno” has brought producers, craftspeople and enthusiasts of local products together in Cazin.
Cycling Route with Historical Significance
The “Stazama Cazinske bune” cycling route is 16 kilometers long. It consists of 80 percent paved paths and 20 percent gravel paths and is suitable for all types of bicycles. In 2025, the “Stazama Cazinske bune” event was held for the third time and developed into a tradition commemorating historical events from the 1950s.
