Bugojno: Culture, History and Mountain Landscapes

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Bugojno was built in 1693 and is one of the oldest mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The municipality’s cultural heritage also includes several designated monuments: the Crkvina (Grudine) archaeological site in Čipuljić, Municipality of Bugojno, is designated as a national archaeological monument. The Rustempašića Tower in Odžak near Bugojno is considered a national historic architectural monument, while the old town of Vesela Straža in the Municipality of Bugojno is designated as a national historic area. The Malkoč and Skenderpašić mausoleum complex in Kopčić, Municipality of Bugojno, is designated as a national monument.

Archaeological finds in the Bugojno area provide evidence of continuous settlement from the Bronze Age to the later Iron Age. The fortified Roman municipium Ad Matricem also existed in the same area. Bugojno was also an important crossroads of Roman roads leading from Dalmatia and Herzegovina to Central Bosnia and Pannonia. The town’s historical development therefore extends from early settlement traces through the Roman period to the preserved religious and architectural landmarks.

The Teatarski festival BiH FEDRA was revived under this name in 2006 and takes place every year in Bugojno. KSC Bugojno organizes this festival, gatherings of puppet and glove-puppet theatres in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bijenale of Yugoslav Puppet Art, the Bugojansko likovno bijenale, Bugojansko proljeće and the Bugojanska vaza. FEDRA has a national character and cooperates with similar festivals in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Macedonia.

The Planinarski dom Duboka is located at an altitude of 740 metres above sea level. A marked, moderately difficult trail via Vrpeć–Podovi reaches the Planinarski dom Duboka on foot in about four hours. From Duboka, a marked gravel path leads for approximately 13 km to Kukavičko jezero, taking about three hours on foot. The Bugojno–Koprivnica–Stožer–Kukavičko jezero–Mračaj–Planinarski dom route is scheduled to take eight hours. The Bugojno–Vrpeć–Vrpećki podovi–Tahirova luka–Planinarski dom route is listed as taking four hours; the Bugojno–Ljubnić–Kalin–Rostovo route is also noted as taking four hours.

For 24 May 2026, the traditional Bugojno na dva točka cycling tour was announced in Bugojno on the occasion of Municipal Day for nature and leisure enthusiasts. For the cycling tour announced for 2026, the main route was to lead to Kukavičko jezero and cover approximately 25 km in total. At the Zlatarica rest area, the site was thoroughly cleaned and new benches were installed.
