Jajce between the Pliva Waterfall and the Fortress

Jajce combines a striking landscape with an unusually dense historic urban complex. The historic complex of Jajce includes a fortress, city walls and towers. It is located on the southern slope of a large rock pyramid between the Pliva and Vrbas rivers. The Pliva Waterfall lies in the city centre; the Pliva's final cascade forms a waterfall approximately 20 metres high.

The historic centre of Jajce is a complex cultural, historical and natural ensemble comprising 17 individual cultural properties created between Late Antiquity and the beginning of the 20th century. The historic urban complex has been on the UNESCO Tentative List since 2006. The history of the city also includes Jajce Fortress: it was the fortification of the city of Jajce, which was once the royal capital and the last territorial possession of the Kingdom of Bosnia.

Among the special sites within the city walls are the Catacombs of Jajce. They are an underground church carved into the rock near Medvjed Tower. Duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić had the catacombs carved out of the rock in the late 14th or early 15th century as the final resting place of the Hrvatinić ducal family.

The Mithraeum of Jajce dates from the 3rd or 4th century AD and is considered the oldest national monument in Jajce. The remains of Bosnia's last king, Stjepan Tomašević, are on display at the Franciscan Museum in Jajce. Another historic institution is the Museum of the Second AVNOJ Session, founded in 1953 as the central Yugoslav memorial museum institution. It is located near the bus station and the waterfall in Jajce.

The Jajce City Gallery is also located in this historic setting: it is housed in the old Kršlak House next to the city wall on the way to the fortress. The Local Historical Ethnographic Collection of Jajce is intended to present the customs and traditions of life in the Jajce area.

The combination of rocks, rivers and lakes continues in the area around Jajce. The Great and Small Pliva Lakes offer opportunities for fishing, kayaking and canoeing, pedal boating, swimming, cycling and walking. On the Pliva, twenty medieval watermills stand on a travertine barrier between the Great and Small Pliva Lakes.

The Vrbas is also associated with a recurring sporting event. Since 2007, the Jajce Rafting Club has organised a rafting regatta on the Vrbas. The regatta starts in Torlakovac and ends at the Jajce Waterfall.
