Nevesinje between Karst Landscapes and Cultural Monuments

In the centre of Nevesinje stands the Cathedral Church of the Holy Ascension. It was built from 1879 to 1886, completed in 1886 and is one of the national cultural monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Careva Mosque is also located in the historic urban area, on a slightly elevated plateau on the western edge of the town. It is included among the national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a site and as the preserved remains of an architectural ensemble. At the same time, it is considered the oldest and largest Islamic religious building erected in Herzegovina during Ottoman rule.

The Nevesinje City Gallery is located in the former JNA hall on Blagoje Parović Square in the centre. It officially opened in May 2013 with an exhibition by academic painter Radmila Lizdek. In addition, the “Nebojša Glogovac” Cultural Centre offers theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops and educational programmes. In Krekovi near Nevesinje, Kalufi is listed under the designation 1504-003 as part of the medieval stećci tombstones.

A distinctive building in the old čaršija is the clock tower, the Sahat-kula. It stands in the centre of Nevesinje’s old čaršija and was built before 1664. Today, it is considered the oldest building of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the area around Nevesinje, southeast of the present-day town, lies the medieval Vjenčac fortress, whose massive walls have survived from its military fortifications. The Church of the Holy Trinity is located in Kifino Selo; it is considered the oldest medieval church in Nevesinje.

The area around Nevesinje, at Vjenčac, is also home to a wooden church dedicated to Saint George, with cascading platforms, water features and a viewing point. A preserved Roman route approximately 500 metres long is documented in the vicinity of Nevesinje, leading directly to the Ovčiji brod Sheep Bridge. The combination of religious buildings, Ottoman architecture, medieval traces and Roman relics can therefore be seen both within the town and in its immediate surroundings.

One of the unusual landscape formations is Novakuša Cave. Its entrance is 70 metres wide and 20 metres high, leading into a large chamber with vertical and horizontal passages beyond it. Novakuša is a natural monument below a stone amphitheatre whose vertical walls reach up to 100 metres in places. Provalija Cave lies approximately 500 metres from the Nevesinje–Gacko main road and can be reached via the bed of the Surdup stream.

Mount Velež features traces of glaciation, a glacial lake and numerous underground karst formations. Sixty-two different climbing routes have been climbed on its slopes. Lake Alagovac lies approximately 4 kilometres north of Nevesinje at the foot of Mount Velež. Depending on the season, visitors can camp, swim, row and fish there. The Zalomka is also one of the area’s notable waterways: during a large part of its summer course, it flows as an underground river.

The Nevesinjsko polje is one of the largest karst fields in Bosnia and Herzegovina and covers 18,000 hectares. Morine, also known as Hercegovački Tibet, has a different landscape character. The area is the largest mountain plateau and pastureland in the municipality of Nevesinje and covers approximately 5,000 hectares. On Morine, near Nevesinje, visitors can still see cattle-herding katuns that continue to be used, where life unfolds almost as it did several centuries ago.

Mount Crvanj is particularly suitable for hiking, collecting medicinal plants, hunting and excursion tourism. On Mount Velež, geological features combine with the 62 climbing routes that have been climbed. Regional activities also include the traditional sporting, cultural and tourism event Nevesinjska olimpijada. It takes place every year in August at Bratački lug in the area around Nevesinje.

On Morine, NOA Morine offers quad bikes, motocross bikes and off-road vehicles. Alongside the plateau’s natural formations, karst fields and underground waters, motorised activities are therefore also a distinct part of the region’s offerings.
