Hotels in Novi Grad between the Sana, Una and cultural heritage
Novi Grad combines the confluence of the Sana and Una with museums, historic monuments, hiking trails and water-based experiences. At the entrance to Novi Grad, the Sana flows into the Una. This marks the beginning of a local history that can be traced both through cultural collections and along the banks and landscapes of the municipality.
Culture
The Novi Grad Museum preserves the collection of ethnologist Milan Karanović. Among its special holdings is a phototypical edition of the Miroslav Gospel produced in 1897, an important Cyrillic monument of South Slavic written culture from the 12th century. The Novi Grad Town Museum also preserves a copy of the 1280 charter of the noble Babonić family from Blagaj; the original is held in the State Archives in Budapest.
The Old Town Hall of Novi Grad was built in 1888 in the pseudo-Moorish style and declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006. Today, it houses the museum and the tourism organisation of the Municipality of Novi Grad. The National Museum, or National Library, of Novi Grad is considered the town's oldest cultural institution. The National Library organises literary evenings, book presentations and exhibitions about notable personalities.
The Stojan Ćelić Legacy is housed in the Town Gallery of Novi Grad and is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It comprises 41 works: four oil paintings, six drawings and 31 graphic works. This legacy was declared a national cultural monument as early as 2005. Another historical trace leads to Turski Novi Fortress: it was built from hewn stone starting in 1726. According to the surviving plans, it had walls seven metres high, a moat six metres wide and three metres deep, was 200 metres long and 150 metres wide, and had five bastions and two kapikulas, meaning entrance towers.
The “Majka Partizanka” monument was created by Marijan Kocković and erected in 1964.
Nature and Activities
The Mlakve Sports and Recreation Centre includes the football stadium of the Sloboda club, with seating for 6,000 spectators, as well as a tennis court. In the Novska planina area, the “Novska Planina” mountaineering club has created and marked 22 kilometres of hiking trails. Since 2017, the 14-kilometre “Roga nije babaroga” trail race has taken place in the natural surroundings of Novska planina. At the end of May, the Branko Ćopić Trail Marathon is also held, with routes of over 42 kilometres and 21 kilometres.
Water
The Novi Grad Sport Fishing Association manages 186 kilometres of waterways and two natural spawning grounds for young trout. Along a one-kilometre section, there are two fishing trails offering three types of fishing: coarse and spinning fishing on the Sana, pike fishing on the Una, and fly fishing from a boat.
The international Una Regatta takes place in two stages: from Blatna to Novi Grad and from Novi Grad to Hrvatska Kostajnica. Within the Municipality of Novi Grad, trips in traditional Una boats are possible along a calmer section of the Una. These trips include stops and photo breaks at numerous waterfalls, tufa formations and Una islands.
The Novi Grad town quay is a three-kilometre-long riverside promenade built of stone. The town quay features an avenue of shade-providing chestnut trees and fragrant lime trees.
Tradition and Culinary Delights
There is an outdoor swimming pool at the site of the Lješljani thermomineral spring. As part of Agrojapra rural tourism, visitors can take part in milling flour at a watermill. In the Japra Valley, Agrojapra has an ethnomuseum exhibition and an exhibition about the cooperative movement. Agrojapra also offers tastings of cold-pressed sunflower oil and pumpkin seed oil.
The House of Podgrmeč and Potkozarje was opened in Novi Grad on 11 July 2025 for the sale and promotion of traditional local agricultural products and handicrafts.
