Opetci: Hotels, Kličevac and the Landscape of Sućeska

Drina National Park extends across approximately 6,300 hectares in the municipality of Srebrenica. The park is known for the canyon of the Drina River, viewpoints offering unique vistas, and extensive forests where the rare Pančić spruce grows. A walking trail leading to the Guber excursion site passes through an unspoiled natural landscape with coniferous and deciduous forests. Thus, around Sućeska, both the river gorge of the Zeleni Jadar and the larger natural area of Drina National Park, with its distinctive forests and viewpoints, are central features.

The remains of the medieval town of Kličevac lie on the right bank of the Zeleni Jadar River, not far from the present-day village of Sućeska. Reaching this medieval town requires a hike of approximately eight kilometers there and back. The route passes through very rough terrain characterized by depressions and steep slopes and crosses the Zeleni Jadar River. Another historical reference is Sase Monastery, which was built in the mid-14th century.

The history of the local community also includes religious remembrance. Every year in July, the Sućeska Jamaat community traditionally organizes a religious commemorative program at various locations in the local community for the people killed during the 1992–1995 war. A Shahid dua was also held in Opetci in memory of the victims killed in the Srebrenica genocide. At a commemorative event in Opetci, Yasin and Tevhid were recited for the victims of the war.

Local agriculture and beekeeping are also concrete aspects associated with Opetci. A beekeeper from Opetci produces royal jelly and queen bees. The beekeeper’s honey from Opetci received a total of eight gold medals for its quality. Opetci also has a family beekeeping tradition spanning more than 150 years.

After returning in 2001, the family of Asim Bećirović engaged in agriculture with milk production in Opetci. Asim Bećirović’s farm in Opetci produced 70,000 liters of milk annually. Alongside rivers, forests, and historical sites, agricultural and family traditions therefore also form part of the character of the local area.
