Balchik: Coast, Nature and Culture

Balchik is a harbour town with a yacht marina and a cargo quay. The municipality’s coastline features varied landscapes: in the northeast and east, eroded cliffs alternate with sheltered beach terraces. Kranevo-Batova Beach lies in the municipality’s southwestern coastal area and has a wooded hinterland.

Nature and culture are also spread across different places in this section. Baltata Nature Reserve was established in 1961 to protect the natural floodplain forest and its flora and fauna. Part of Golden Sands Nature Park lies within the land area of Kranevo: it covers 26.2 hectares there.

The ancient Temple of Cybele was built in the 3rd century BC and remained in use until the 4th century AD. Its floor plan is rectangular; the façade faces the sea, and the entrance is to the south. It is considered the only Temple of Cybele discovered so far in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula and the only one in the world to be so well preserved. The Historical Museum presents cultural monuments from the city’s prehistoric, ancient and medieval periods.

The Dvoretsa architectural and park complex was created as the residence of Queen Marie of Romania and is open to visitors year-round, including weekends and public holidays. Another historical site is the medieval fortress in the Horizont district, classified as an immovable cultural heritage site of national importance.

The Ak Yazala Baba – St. Atanas tekke is located in the village of Obrochishte and is an artistic cultural monument of local importance. Two separate monumental buildings remain from the once-extensive religious complex: the türbe, the saint’s tomb, and the imaret. The dervishes performed their rites and welcomed guests there.

In Baltata, you can find nature trails with different features: a completed tourist eco-trail runs between Albena and Kranevo. There are also two educational eco-trails leading to two towers from which birds and animals can be observed. The area was designated to protect the floodplain forest and its flora and fauna.

The open-air exhibition of large cacti and succulents is the main attraction at the University Botanical Garden in Balchik. Those interested in water-based fun can visit Aquamania water park in Albena, which has various attractions for all age groups. The Pro Racer attraction consists of four slides with a total length of 315 metres.

Balchik also offers maritime activities: the Marine Club trains children and young people in sailing and the values of maritime culture. The international Poseidon – Balchik regatta brings together 60 to 70 yachts every year. Another option to consider when planning a trip is Balchik-Tuzla, a mud lake with therapeutic sea mud. In summer, the established Balchik Classic Days festival takes place at the Melnitsata open-air stage.
