Nature
The avenue-like Karvuna shelterbelts were planted on both sides of a road, with a four-metre-wide road running through their middle. Some of the Karvuna shelterbelts are laid out as avenue-like strips on both sides of a road. Karvuna also has sections of rural and forest roads.
History
Medieval Balchik was called Karbona (Karvuna) in Bulgarian and Greek documents from the 13th and 14th centuries. Medieval Karvuna is believed to have been the seat of the Dobrujan ruler Balik. The Kraneia Fortress near Kranevo has been proposed as a possible identification of historical Karvuna.
Geographical Setting
Karvuna is home to a State Psychiatric Hospital. The State Psychiatric Hospital of Karvuna stands on extensive wooded grounds surrounded by a fence along the perimeter. It is located in an isolated area about 50 kilometres north of Varna. In 2018, the Senokos–Karvuna road was described as serving the hospital because Karvuna had no inhabitants.
