Geographical Location

The Yaylata Archaeological Reserve is located about one kilometer south of Kamen Bryag. Taukliman, also known as Bird Bay, is a protected area about eight kilometers from Kamen Bryag.

Culture and History

Yaylata contains prehistoric cave dwellings. These include a cave settlement with 101 dwellings that was inhabited as early as the fifth millennium BC.

The sites at Yaylata include a small early Byzantine fortress built at the end of the fifth century, as well as three necropolises carved into the cliffs, with family tombs dating from the third to the fifth century. Ancient remains include a sanctuary, sacrificial stones, wine-making facilities, and four rock-cut tombs. Yaylata also contains Thracian tombs, ancient cellars, and a defensive wall. Stone icons and crosses are engraved along the cave walls.

Nature

More than 178 bird species nest in Yaylata or pass through the area on their way to the African coast to spend the winter.
