Cape Kaliakra and its archaeological reserve are located 12 km southeast of Kavarna. The rocky peninsula extends about 2 km into the sea and is known for its preserved natural surroundings and panoramic coastal views. Coast
Kavarna lies on a rocky coast in the northern part of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. Within Kavarna Municipality, the coast stretches for 42 km; the total beach area is 74,000 square meters.
Cape Chirakman, about 3 km south of Kavarna, preserves the remains of the ancient Thracian-Greek colony of Bizone, a restored 4th-century fortification wall, and an excavated basilica. The cape is a visitor attraction.
History and Culture
The “Dobrudzha and the Sea” exhibition displays stone anchors and amphorae recovered during underwater archaeological expeditions. Using reproductions of ancient and medieval maps, it illustrates ancient seafaring in the northern Black Sea. The exhibition is housed in a restored late medieval hammam.
The Kavarna History Museum is located next to the restored medieval bathhouse, which was converted into a maritime museum. It contains finds dating from the 5th–6th century BC to 1940 and displays silver coins from the hoard of Tsar Ivan Alexander.
The Ethnographic Complex in Kavarna opened to visitors in 1984 on the site of the city’s first Bulgarian school. It includes a restored shoemaker’s workshop and presents urban life from the late 19th to the early 20th century. It also represents the ethnographic traditions of Dobrudzha, the Gagauz people, and Kotel, and illustrates various knitting techniques in its textile exhibitions.
Nature
The Kaliakra protected area includes parts of Kavarna and a steep coast with caves and rock niches. It contains some of Bulgaria’s best-preserved steppe habitats and records 237 bird species. The area lies along Via Pontica, a major European bird migration route.
Kavarna is included in the Belite Skali protected area. The area includes a steep coast and adjacent shallow marine waters.
Cuisine and Events
The Mussel and Fish Fest in Kavarna features seafood dishes and delicacies in demonstrations and showcases regional seafood cuisine. The Kavarna Rock Fest was first held in 2006.
