Zaya: Hotels and Accommodation

Since 2019, the ethnographic collection “Life in the Bulgarian Village, 19th–20th Century” has been on display at the community center in Zaya. It is registered with Bulgaria’s Ministry of Culture; children and adults from Bulgaria and abroad are listed among its visitors. The collection comprises more than 180 objects donated by local residents, and new materials continue to be added.

Culture

The community center’s program includes recurring traditional celebrations such as Zarazan, Christmas, New Year’s, and a harvest festival. Amateur theater and other performances are mentioned for larger celebrations. Zaya’s documented craft heritage includes fulling and stone cutting.

Wedding customs have also been passed down: In one recorded ritual, the bride sprinkled water with millet, basil, and a coin before pouring the vessel out at the entrance to the house. Recorded customs also included guests bringing specially baked loaves and cooked chickens.

History

Gera was connected to a Roman road and a way station, from which a small Roman trading settlement later developed. In the village of Gera, there is evidence of a Roman settlement, including large clay vessels, clay water pipes, and Roman coins.

The Kaleto fortress is described as part of the defensive system protecting Tarnovo. The Otets Paisii School in Zaya opened in 1887; construction began in 1882 and was completed in 1888. It also served children from neighboring villages.

Nature

Zaya is located on high mountain ridges north of the Dryanovska River. A panorama toward the Stara Planina is described for the village.

Zaya is located about 4 km east of Dryanovo on the main road connecting Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo. Five guesthouses are listed for Zaya: “Двата щъркела”, “Механджийска къща”, “Заедно”, “Тибор”, and “ДАР”. The Tibor guesthouse is described as being located near Dryanovo, Dryanovo Monastery, and the Bacho Kiro Cave.
