Culture and history

Orlovo is associated with several specific cultural and historical landmarks. In the town center, south of the town hall, there is a freestanding memorial plaque for Russian troops who were stationed in Orlovo. The town is also home to an Orthodox church called St Athanasius.

Near Orlovo, a medieval settlement has been identified as archaeological site 42 along the Greece–Bulgaria gas pipeline route. Archaeobotanical analyses of pits at the settlement revealed common wheat, rye, and peas. A coin of Alexios I Komnenos, dated to the years 1081–1118, was also found at the settlement. The most recent coin identified from the settlement is a billon aspron minted under Manuel I Komnenos between 1143 and 1180.

Shells found near Orlovo from the southern Aegean were used as raw material for the production of jewelry.

Location and landscape

The medieval settlement near Orlovo lies south of the road between Mandra and Orlovo, on the left bank of the Kozletska. It is located between the valleys of the Maritsa and Arda rivers.

Events and accommodation

The fourth regional folklore festival “Orlovski Napevi” was announced for July 18, 2021, in Orlovo. Authentic folklore groups and soloists, dance ensembles, and groups presenting folk customs, stories, and legends were announced for the 2021 edition. The Vasil Levski 1927 Community Center in Orlovo also organizes a horo tradition that began on March 12, 2017.
