Kopilovtsi: Hotels and Accommodations

Culture

The monastery complex includes a three-nave church as well as residential and ancillary buildings. The village church of Kopilovtsi was built in 1905 and later renovated after a period of disuse.

The Blagoveshchenie Monastery follows the Julian calendar for its religious festivals. The construction of the monastery was financed entirely through the monks’ agricultural work.

History

In the Manzaritsa locality, about 1 km southeast of Kopilovtsi, lie the ruins of a large Roman-era sanctuary dedicated to Zeus and Hera and associated with the ancient settlement of Karistorum. The sanctuary was intensively used until the end of the 4th century and was then violently destroyed.

In nearby Kyustendil, the Regional Historical Museum displays busts of Zeus and Hera from the 2nd century, originating from the sanctuary near Kopilovtsi.

Surroundings

Spasovitsa Hill rises above Kopilovtsi and is also known as Nikolichevsko Burdo.

Religious Life

A festive Christmas liturgy at the monastery attracted dozens of lay visitors from all over Bulgaria.

Cuisine

The monastery raises trout in its own fishpond and produces milk, cheese, honey, and bread. The monks preserve old recipes they learned from their grandparents.
