Culture and History
Kaleto is a Late Antique and medieval fortress near the center of Debnevo that defended the Troyan Pass. The earliest traces of human presence at Kaleto date back to the 5th millennium BC; during the Late Iron Age, the hill was inhabited as a Thracian settlement. The surviving archaeological structures include fortification walls, residential and farm buildings, as well as production facilities.
The stone bridge in Debnevo dates from 1904 and was built by master craftsman Filip Raykov. The village also has two pottery workshops that are still in operation.
The Church of St. Petka was built in 1892 by the Tryavna master craftsman Pavel Kolev. It contains icons by Vasil Genkov from Tryavna, as well as wood carvings by the hieromonk Meletius. The church can be visited by prior request to the village authorities.
River and Landscape
Debnevo lies on the Vidima River and offers summer recreation and fishing opportunities there. The village also has a riverside walk suitable for relaxing and picnicking.
The riverside locality of Laka hosts various summer events. Visitors can pitch a tent there and stay for several peaceful days.
Events
The Debnevo village festival takes place in the last week of October, around St. Dimitar’s Day. In addition, JAM ON THE RIVER is scheduled to take place in Debnevo from July 29 to August 1, 2026. The festival brings music and visual art to picturesque locations along the Vidima River.
