Culture and History

The Icon Hall of the Bachkovo Monastery Museum displays icons from the 13th to the 19th century, most of which have been restored. It also presents the stylistic development of Orthodox icon painting.

The monastery complex includes the active Church of St. Athanasius, which was built in 1848. The Winter Church of St. Archangels was built in the late 12th or early 13th century.

Location

Bachkovo Monastery is located about 500 meters south of the village. Bachkovo is situated about 8 km from Asenovgrad and 23 km southeast of Plovdiv. The village is a gateway to the Central Rhodopes; routes continue towards Pamporovo and Smolyan.

Nature

The Chervenata Stena Biosphere Reserve is located directly next to Bachkovo Monastery and provides a habitat for rare animal species. A four-hour hike from the monastery to the Marciganitsa Hut leads through this biosphere reserve.

The stream flowing down from Kluviyata forms two waterfalls in the valley. Every spring, Haberlea rhodopensis blooms on the surrounding rocks in the Chervenata Stena area, with sky-blue flowers.

Hiking and Pilgrimage Routes

A cultural route leads from Bachkovo Monastery via Kluviyata to the Chapel of St. Archangels and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The historic Bachkovski Road pilgrimage route runs from Asen's Fortress to Bachkovo Monastery along sections of Roman and medieval roads.

The Chervenata Stena route area offers views of the Slivodolsko Waterfalls, rock bridges, and caves.

Local Cuisine

The Chepelarska River, locally called Chaya, supplied Bachkovo Monastery with trout for many years; nearby restaurants serve trout.
