Asenowgrad: Hotels and Accommodation

Around two kilometres above Asenowgrad lies Asenova Fortress, a cultural monument of national significance. The site includes a viewpoint, water reservoirs, rulers’ residences and shelters. Culture and History

The Ethnographic House of Asenowgrad is a cultural monument dating from the mid-19th century and depicts urban life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It preserves carved ceilings known as the “Olympic Sun”, as well as an authentic paved courtyard.

St. George Old School was the first building in Asenowgrad constructed according to a building plan and was built shortly before the liberation. The building contains a reconstruction of a classroom from that era, a replica of the Gandi bookshop, and exhibitions about civic and cultural societies.

The Dimitar Kovachev Paleontological Museum is a branch of Bulgaria’s National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It presents the evolution of proboscideans and includes a replica of Deinotherium gigantissimum with a skeleton more than four metres high. The museum attracts tourists from Bulgaria and abroad and has educational value for children, school pupils and students.

Nature and Trails

Asenowgrad is a natural route through the Rhodopes connecting Thrace with the Aegean. The “Road to the Monastery” route follows a historic pilgrimage path from Asenova Fortress to Bachkovo Monastery and runs along the river.

Near Dobrostan lies Dobrostanski Biser Cave, with cave formations and sinter pools. It stretches for 727 metres and reaches a depth of 61 metres. The surrounding area of Dobrostan supports paragliding, mountain biking and orienteering.

The route from Bachkovo Monastery to Marciganitsa Hut takes around four hours and leads through the Chervenata Stena Biosphere Reserve. It provides access to Slivodolsko Padalo Waterfall, rock bridges and caves.

The “Asenowgrad – Sacred Gate of the Rhodopes” cultural route begins in Asenowgrad. The town and the surrounding sights can be explored on foot in a day or over a weekend.

Food and Wine

Stanimashki sarmichki are described as one of Asenowgrad’s most characteristic dishes and as a dish found only there. Within the wider wine region around Plovdiv, Asenowgrad is described as the place with the deepest traditions for the Mavrud grape variety.
