Culture and history

The Church of Saint George the Victorious in Karnare was built between 1947 and 1955. Karnare is described as the only Bulgarian village that succeeded in building a church during this period.

Fragments of the Roman Via Traiana have been preserved around the Troyan Pass. This route included the mountaintop station of Montemno near Beklemeto and a stretch that descended towards Hristo Danovo. The Troyan Monastery is located in the wider regional surroundings of Karnare.

Landscape

Galibega, Kel Kaya (Dermen Kaya), Sivriyata, and Tabiyata are located near Karnare. These names identify landscape features in the immediate vicinity of the village without grouping them into a single area.

Geographical setting

The Troyan Pass, also known as Beklemeto, connects Karnare with Troyan. It is approximately 50 kilometers long and reaches an elevation of 1,565 meters at its highest point.

The Goraltepe Arch Memorial is located approximately a 15-minute walk east of Beklemeto’s highest point. A narrow paved road leads there from the south side. From the platform, the view extends north towards the Beli Osam and Troyan valleys and south towards Sredna Gora, the Rhodope Mountains, and Rila.

The Central Balkan National Park is located in the surrounding area of Karnare.
