The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo complex contains 14th-century murals associated with the Tarnovo School of Painting. The first hermit cells and churches in this complex date from the 12th century. In 1979, the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Sightseeing

The medieval city of Cherven has a car park and information signs for visitors. Orlova-Chuka Cave also has a car park; advance booking is required because speleological guides are needed for the tours.

Nature

Rusenski Lom Nature Park was designated a protected area in 1970 in order to preserve its characteristic landscape, biodiversity, and cultural and historical heritage. The Rusenski Lom Valley combines varied relief, a specific microclimate, rock formations, and wetlands. A total of 192 bird species have been observed in the nature park, including 172 rare or protected species.

Trails

The proposed routes in the nature park can be traveled on foot, horseback, or by bicycle; motor vehicles are prohibited there. The Nisovo–Svalenik route is 17.1 kilometers long.

Getting There

Ivanovo can be reached via the Ruse–Sofia motorway, the Ruse–Dve Mogili road, and the Ruse–Sofia railway line.
