Nisovo: Hotels and Accommodation

Nature

The Dendro Trail reaches a rocky viewpoint with panoramic views of the Malki Lom River. More than 30 local tree and shrub species along the trail are labelled with name signs. There are also five large information boards with QR codes and information in English.

Nisovo borders the Rusenski Lom Nature Park directly. There, the river flows through picturesque gorges bordered by rocks up to 120 metres high; there are also caves and rock formations. In the wider area of Rusenski Lom Nature Park, the landscape is designated as an important ornithological area. Falcons, goshawks, Egyptian vultures, red-breasted geese, rock doves and other birds can be observed there.

Trails

The Lomovete Nature Reserve Complex is reached from Nisovo via a 1.5 km branch road off the road to Popovo. From the Lomovete Complex, a marked trail descends in five minutes to an unpaved road on the left bank of the Malki Lom. The subsequent route follows the Malki Lom River 300 metres upstream along this unpaved road to a small bridge with a railing leading to the opposite bank.

Continuing from the Dendro Trail to the monasteries of Nisovo adds 4 km. A rest area is provided by the monasteries of Nisovo. The rock monastery complex is reached via a steep staircase carved into the rock.

Culture

The rock monastery complex dates back to the 11th century. Its remains include a church and cells carved into the rock as extensions of existing caves.

In nearby Cherven, the inner fortified city had towers and bastions, while the outer city occupied the foot of a rocky ridge. An artificial tunnel for water supply was found there; the fortress watchtower is described as the only surviving medieval tower in Bulgaria.
