Ivanovo at a glance

The municipal centre is in Ivanovo. The municipality includes the settlements of Koshov, Cherven, Ivanovo, Mechka, Bozhichen and Nisovo. Rusenski Lom Nature Park covers parts of the areas of Svalenik, Shtraklevo, Nisovo, Cherven and Koshov; the village of Pisanets in Vetovo Municipality is also within the park. The rock churches near the village of Ivanovo developed into a complex of churches, chapels, monasteries and cells carved into the rock. Their 14th-century murals bear witness to the skill of the artists of the Tarnovo School of Painting.

Which historical sites define Ivanovo?

The rock churches bring together different forms of sacred architecture and murals from the Tarnovo School of Painting. The medieval town fortress of Cherven offers a different historical perspective: it lies in Rusenski Lom Nature Park and is an archaeological reserve. The municipality thus highlights both rock-hewn spaces used for religious purposes and the remains of a medieval town fortress.

What do the churches, finds and traditions tell us?

In Tabachka, the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God (“Uspenie Presvetiya Bogoroditsi”) was built in 1862. It has 82 icons by masters of the Trevna School and houses a museum with liturgical books donated by the Russian tsar’s family. Prehistoric finds dating to 4300 BC were discovered in the “Vodna” cave near Tabachka. The church and cave finds thus point to different periods and forms of cultural heritage.

Koshov also offers historical and cultural points of interest: the Gramovets rock monastery complex is one of its archaeological sights. There is also a women’s folk group with 12 members and a men’s amateur ensemble with 20 members; the old “Dzhamal” ritual is performed there. In Bozhichen, rock formations and caves shape the scenic gorge section of the Cherni Lom River, which is a natural landmark. The riverbank cliffs contain numerous caves and cells; one of the complexes there is called “Tsarkvata” and has surviving traces of frescoes.

What trails and natural features are there?

A 2 km historical circular trail starts at the car park in front of the fortress in the village of Cherven. It leads up steps to the fortress entrance; along the way, you can see niches carved into the rock for saltpetre extraction. A guide from the Regional Historical Museum of Ruse is permanently available at the fortress. The Directorate of Rusenski Lom Nature Park has marked three hiking trails in the Nisovo area. There is also an elm tree about 700 years old, said to date from the Second Bulgarian Empire.
