Beli Iskar: Hotels and Accommodation

Nature and Trails

The Beli Iskar Eco-trail begins above the settlement at an altitude of 1,215 metres and leads to a panoramic terrace at 1,528 metres. The trail is 7 kilometres long and takes around 3 hours. A car park is available at the entrance to the Eco-trail. Information boards describe attractions along the route. The trail also includes elevated walkways for people with disabilities, as well as rest areas, some of which have barbecue facilities.

The 1,528-metre-high panoramic terrace offers views of the surrounding area and of tributaries of the Beli Iskar River. From Beli Iskar, hiking trails lead to many peaks, mountain huts and establishments in the Rila Mountains. About 9 kilometres above Beli Iskar lies the beginning of the Central Rila Reserve, which is described as Bulgaria’s largest reserve and one of the largest reserves in Europe.

Culture and History

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Beli Iskar is dated to 1847 and is associated with a meeting between the poet Peyo Yavorov and Lora in 1912. Its patronal feast and the village fair take place on 15 August. The historical fountains and fountain complexes preserved in Beli Iskar include Voynishkoto Cheshme, Kadun Kladenets and Belyov Kladenets.

The area’s first tourist centre was established in 2003 on Beli Iskar’s central square. The Beli Iskar Tourist Association offers opportunities to learn about local traditions and crafts and is connected to mountain and horse-riding routes.

Local Cuisine and Traditions

Beli Iskar hosts the Rila Zelnik Festival, a recurring culinary and folklore event featuring performances by local cultural groups. A Christmas Eve tradition in Beli Iskar is meat-free leek zelnik. Guests can also order local zelnik in advance, a pastry filled with spinach or sorrel.

Cycling

A cycling route begins at the bridge over the Beli Iskar River at the entrance to the village from the direction of Samokov. It is classified as a route with a low level of technical difficulty. One section follows broad, level paths that almost resemble avenues.
