History and Culture

Makotsevo is described as one of Bulgaria’s old villages and has existed since the beginning of the 15th century. The Church of the Great Martyr St. Dimitar in Makotsevo is a cultural monument. It was built in 1862 and restored in 2003.

In western Makotsevo lies the St. George votive site, with four stone votive monuments. These include richly decorated, upright-standing examples. The site is described as an important monument of memorial stone sculpture in Christian Bulgaria.

Makotsevo is located in Ihtiman Sredna Gora. The Makotsevska River flows through the area of the village.

The nearby Mount Opor reaches 1,089 metres. The remains of a Roman fortress are located on the mountain.

The Horseman Ranch in Makotsevo offers hourly and half-day riding activities for beginners and advanced riders. A ten-hour package with individual riding lessons is also available there.
