Akhtopol: Hotels and Accommodation

Ahtopol is a small seaside resort, not a large resort, attracting visitors who seek peace and quiet. The town is located on a small rocky peninsula approximately 500 metres long and 300 metres wide. The old town preserves sections of its medieval fortifications alongside restored traditional wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also home to the 17th-century Church of Saint Constantine and Saint Helena, with its original carved iconostasis.

The late antique and medieval fortress of Ahtopol is located on a small peninsula of approximately 5–6 decares; large parts of its area overlap with the modern town. The fortress is open to visitors free of charge all year round.

The Church of the Ascension of Christ survived the fire that destroyed Ahtopol in 1918. It was built in 1796 and belongs to the Saint Yana monastery complex. Anchors found in Ahtopol’s aqueducts attest to the seafaring activities of the peninsula’s inhabitants in various historical periods.

A stone axe and ceramic fragments from Ahtopol provide evidence of settlement during the Late Stone Age and Early Bronze Age. Thracian Bronze Age artefacts are also associated with Ahtopol.

The “History of the Anchor” Museum is located approximately 250 metres from Ahtopol Pier, on the shore of Ahtopol Bay within Strandzha Nature Park. It displays ship cannons, mortars, coins, ceramics, bells and other equipment recovered from Turkish, Greek, French, Russian, Byzantine and Roman shipwrecks. The museum also includes Ahtopol’s old harbour lighthouse.

The Greek School in Ahtopol has hosted exhibitions associated with a Summer Academy and a symposium.

Strandzha Nature Park is located near Ahtopol and offers an opportunity for an excursion from the town. In the Strandzha area near Ahtopol, there are hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels.

The municipal route “Ahtopol – The Veleka River Mouth” is 5 kilometres long, takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes, and is suitable for mountain biking.
