Ogulin: Hotels and Accommodation

Ogulin is home to Frankopan Castle, which Bernardin Frankopan had built around 1500 above the Dobra Gorge. The town is located approximately 2 km from the Zagreb–Split motorway. Anyone wishing to book a hotel in Ogulin can continue their accommodation search afterwards.

Culture and History

The Zavičajni muzej includes a memorial room dedicated to Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić as well as a mountaineering exhibition on climbing and alpinism in Croatia. The archaeological exhibition features Japodian and Roman finds discovered in the wider area around Ogulin. The Chapel of St Bernardin is a restored historic monument with a distinctly Gothic architectural character; the tombstone of Stjepan II Frankopan is also displayed there.

Ivanina kuća bajke is a multimedia and interactive visitor centre dedicated to fairy tales and fairy-tale creativity. Throughout the year, the centre organises creative educational programmes on storytelling, literary and visual expression, film, performing and applied arts, and design for children and adults. Events also include Bajkovita zima uz ognjište, a traditional storytelling event organised by Ivanina kuća bajke in Ogulin.

The Ogulinski festival bajke is a cultural and artistic event in Ogulin, where streets and squares become festival stages. The programme includes theatre, street theatre, storytelling and creative workshops.

Nature and Water

In the centre of Ogulin lies Đulin ponor, a hydrogeological natural monument. The Dobra disappears underground at this point; together with Medvedica Cave, the system extends into Croatia’s longest speleological feature. The cliffs of Đulin ponor are described as a challenge for mountaineers.

Sabljaci is a 170-hectare reservoir on the Zagorska Mrežnica, locally known as the “Ogulin Sea”. Swimming, rowing, windsurfing, walking, cycling and rowing regattas are available at Sabljaci. The Dobra is suitable for swimming in Ogulin. In the immediate vicinity, Rupećica Cave is mentioned because of the discovery of an olm.

Activities

Ogulin’s themed routes include the Ruta bajke and an educational botanical trail on Mount Klek. In the immediate vicinity, hiking trails from Ogulin towards Klek are described, with a walking time of approximately three hours; additional marked trails lead to Kneja and Stožac. The vertical rock face of Klek is used by mountaineers. Klek is also described as a botanical reserve with a rich Tertiary flora.

Ogulin has two marked regional cycling routes totalling 131 km. Almost 100 km of local cycling routes are connected to Ogulin’s regional routes. Bikepark Ribarići is available as part of Ogulin’s cycling offer.

Ogulinski kiseli kupus/Ogulinsko kiselo zelje is registered as a product with a protected designation of origin. It is produced and processed in the town of Ogulin and the municipality of Josipdol.
