Location and Arrival
Šipanska Luka is located in the inner part of the bay of the same name. Those wishing to book a hotel in Sipanska Luka can then continue their accommodation search. Šipanska Luka is a larger settlement on Šipan and is connected to Suđurađ by a bus route. A road connects Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ through the fertile Šipansko Field.
Shoreline and Landscape
Cafés and small restaurants line the waterfront promenade. Excursion boats dock on the outer side of the pier used for the arrival of passenger boats. The shore in Šipanska Luka is suitable for a leisurely walk upon arrival among stone houses, palm trees and small piers. The central park areas were landscaped with palm trees and other plant species in the 1950s.
A waterfront promenade approximately 1 kilometre long leads to the sandy Priježba Beach. The northern shore around Katino (Gradi) and Kaludrica is used for swimming by tourists and residents. There are several places along the edges of the bay of Šipanska Luka where people can enter the water for swimming.
The area of Šipanska Luka together with its sea is designated as a particularly valuable natural landscape; a large part of it is also classified as a cultural landscape.
Culture and History
The townscape combines vernacular architecture with architecture associated with more affluent social groups from various historical periods. The Sorgo-Selem summer estate is registered under Šipanska Luka with the code Z-504 in the Cultural Heritage Register. The complex preserves Renaissance stonework; an orsan and a terrace are visible in its wall facing the shore.
The Sorgo summer residence, Knežev Dvor and several historic churches are associated with Šipanska Luka. St. Anthony, St. Michael, St. Saviour and St. Stephen the First Martyr are entered in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods; the first-mentioned church is also individually protected as a cultural good in Šipanska Luka. The Krivonosović–Sargojević House, known as Pracatovo, is likewise individually protected as a cultural good.
The parish church of St. Stephen in Šipanska Luka contains a 15th-century painting of the Virgin and Child by the Venetian painter Panteleone. Knežev Dvor above Šipanska Luka was built in 1450. It stands at the highest point of the settlement and offers views over western Šipan, the sea, the central field and Suđurađ. The Altesti summer estate is listed as cultural heritage in Šipanska Luka. A registered underwater archaeological site near Cape Tiha is also associated with the town.
Local Character
The Mediterranean agriculture associated with Šipanska Luka includes grapevines, figs, almonds, citrus fruits, carob and pomegranates. In the two main villages on Šipan, restaurants and taverns by the water typically focus on fresh fish, grilled seafood, seasonal vegetables, olive oil and simple Mediterranean dishes.
