Culture and history

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Pločice was originally dedicated to Saint Lazarus; its dedication was changed to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 2000. The church was extended in 1869 and rededicated on July 16, 1903.

The Chapel of Saint Roch in Račevo Polje dates back to a 15th-century chapel dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. After the plague of 1793, the restored chapel was given Saint Roch as its new dedication. After suffering severe earthquake damage in 1979, the chapel was rebuilt and blessed in 1986. The Chapel of Saint Joseph the Worker is a cemetery chapel in Pločice built in 1989.

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the parish house with bell tower are designated in Konavle as sacred buildings and complexes. In addition, the group of five tumuli in Pločice is recognized in Konavle as an archaeological site in the field.

A 60-meter-long cistern built in 1910 to supply the military with water is still visible next to the village church in Pločice. When the Donja Glavska–Zelenika railway line opened, Pločice became an important station for the Austrian army.

Nature and cuisine

A dry-stone hut next to the Pločićka lokva is described as a monument to Konavle’s agricultural life. The Pločićka lokva is used by the residents of Pločice and the surrounding villages of Konavle for irrigation. The wetland at the Pločićka lokva remains in use; its restoration is linked to the preservation of biodiversity.

In the hinterland of Konavle, taverns and rural houses in old regional homes traditionally serve locally prepared dishes. These include meat and fish from the stone oven, smoked ham, cheese preserved in oil, and green pasta.

Archaeological traces

The Illyrian necropolises in the Mikulići–Pločice area below Čilipi are largely inaccessible and are associated with the grave goods of ancient Illyrian tribal princes. Approximately 115 stone formations associated with Illyrian necropolises are located mainly in Mikulići, Pločice, and below Čilipi.
