Humac: Hotels and Accommodation

Humac is protected in Croatia as a rural heritage ensemble. The settlement consists of 140 small houses, almost entirely built of stone. Its present appearance dates from the 17th century, while Humac was founded as early as the 13th century; a wish to book a hotel in Humac can be part of planning a trip centred around this place.

Culture

The historic houses preserve rain gutters, wine presses and bread ovens in communal courtyards. For centuries, the cottages of Humac served as seasonal houses for owners from Vrisnik, who cultivated their fields.

The Museum of the Jelsa District includes a visitable Winegrower Collection in Humac. The Church of SS John and Paul in Humac was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The restored parish church named Church of SS John and Paul is surrounded by cypress trees.

Nature

Grapčeva Cave is located near Humac. The cave contains stalactites and stalagmites and has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1964. Regular guided tours of Grapčeva Cave are also offered nearby during the summer months.

The lack of street lighting in Humac supports stargazing; in 2020, the settlement was selected as a site for a meteor camera. A telescope on a small hill outside Humac offers magnified views of the sea and landscapes of Hvar, as well as Brač and the mainland.

Cycling and Trails

The NA VRH cycling route passes through Humac and is 23.9 kilometres long; it connects Jelsa, Pitve, Martinica and Humac.

The HUMAC cycling route is a 32-kilometre circular route starting and ending in Humac. It combines asphalt and gravel roads.

Location

Humac is located near State Road 116, which crosses central Hvar between Sućuraj and Hvar via Jelsa and Stari Grad.
