Culture

The protected rural cultural heritage complex of Pitve bears the Croatian register code Z-6762. The Church of St. James in Pitve is listed as an individual cultural asset under the Croatian register code Z-6582. The historicist building was constructed in the late Gothic style and was first mentioned in historical documents in 1452.

The Vinogradarska Collection in Pitve contains traditional tools for working in the fields, vineyards and konoba, equipment for wine production and storage, as well as traditional kitchen utensils. It is a permanent museum exhibition, belongs to the Jelsa Municipal Museum and was created through the restoration of the building and the collection. The Pitve Wine Collection presents the rural life of Hvar, as well as life in viticulture and winemaking, as part of the island’s culture and identity.

Pitve is one of six central settlements on Hvar that participate in the Za-Križen procession, a tradition that has existed for more than 500 years. On Maundy Thursday evening, it sets out from Pitve and five other settlements, visits the parish churches of all six places and returns to its home church at dawn on Good Friday. Through Pitve, the procession covers 25 kilometres in approximately eight hours.

The Chapel of St. Roch in Lower Pitve was extensively renovated inside and out in 2011. Prayer gatherings and special celebrations for St. Roch and Our Lady of the Snows are occasionally held there.

Landscape

The Zlatni Rat beach is located in the surrounding area of Pitve. Otočić Zečevo is near Pitve. Otok Hvar is also near Pitve. The Spanish Fortress is located in the wider regional surroundings of Pitve. Otok Šćedro is also located in the surrounding area of Pitve.

Pitve’s cultivated fields include olive groves and vineyards; after the harvests, the residents produce wine and olive oil there.

Things to Do

The OVER THE TOP cycling route passes through Pitve towards the Pitve–Zavala Tunnel and is part of a 23.09-kilometre asphalt and macadam route. Visitors can walk through Pitve’s paved lanes and admire the stonework of the historic settlement.

Cuisine

Konoba Dvor Duboković in Pitve serves dishes prepared under a baking bell, grilled and stewed fish, risotto, as well as pašticada with homemade gnocchi. These are accompanied by wines from the family cellar and homemade liqueurs.
