The Trail 631 Barban, a 33 km cycling route, passes through Melnica as well as forests, fields, hills and rural villages in the Barban area before returning to Barban. From Melnica and FrkeÄi, the route continues along gravel roads through the forests and cultivated fields around Barban. The circuit has 481 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of three hours. It crosses several hills; the views extend to the western mountains and, to the east, the Kvarner Sea. Local History
Historically, Melnica included the hamlets of FrkeÄi, Grabri, Kvarantija and Å padići in addition to the central settlement. Melnica is also part of a concentration of rural ensembles along the main traffic routes around Barban. There is a separate local history study on Melnica that focuses on the will of don Antun Grgorinić from 1880.
Culture
In the broader context of the municipality of Barban, preserved Gothic and Baroque buildings, frescoes, Glagolitic inscriptions, churches, palaces, city walls and the traditional equestrian game Trka na prstenaccome together.
Customs
On 22 February 2025, the fifth traditional procession of the MelniÄke maÅ¡kare passed through seven villages; 80 people took part. It began in Melnica and visited Grabri, Želiski, IvanoÅ¡ići, Grandići, Kožljani and FrkeÄi. In Melnica, the procession ended with a meal and the traditional burning of the Pust.
