Culture and History

The Church of Saint Peter the Apostle in Šajini is traditionally dated to the year 1400. It was consecrated in 1688, expanded with a side chapel in 1890, and completely renovated in 2002. It served as the church of the former Chaplaincy of St. Peter in Šajini, which existed from 1750 to 1988.

The memorial room in Šajini can be visited by arrangement with the local committee of Šajini. The permanent memorial exhibition room in Šajini is designated as one of only two memorial exhibition or museum sites in southern Istria.

The “9 January” Spomen Park is a memorial area for more than 50 civilians who were killed during the fascist attack on 9 January 1944. A monument honoring the victims stands at the center of the park. The monument bears the inscription “Nepresušan izvor nade za budućnost”, and water is incorporated into the structure.

The 1944 attack killed 54 inhabitants; the village was looted and burned down. Every year, descendants and local officials lay flowers and wreaths at the victims’ monument.

Religious Tradition

The Maynica procession of the Virgin Mary, held on the last Sunday in May, is associated with the church. During it, a wooden statue of the Madonna is carried around Šajini. A thanksgiving Mass was held in Šajini on the occasion of the restoration of the church.

Getting Around

The Civilian Victims Route includes Šajini between the sites in Pula and Gajana and the village of Bokordići. The monuments and sites along this route are located on paved public roads. They are well connected by local and regional bus services.
