Šćulci: Hotels and accommodations

Nature

The Butoniga valley section of Motovunska šuma stretches from its confluence with the Mirna to the hamlet of Šćulci below Breg Hill. Motovunska šuma is home to truffles, including the white truffle Tuber magnatum. It has aesthetic and recreational value for the surrounding area.

Culture

In Šćulci, basket weaving from willow branches is associated with an almost forgotten traditional craft practiced by one of the few artisans of its kind in Istria. The Gunjci tradition associated with Šćulci uses bass and violin; the ensemble was later expanded to include a small clarinet. Gunjci from Šćulci traditionally performed at church celebrations, folk festivals, village fairs, Šagres, and Osmices.

At the twelfth edition of the festival Vrhuvšćina, mili kraj, held in Vrh in June, musicians playing traditional instruments from Šćulci performed. Nearby, the parish church of Vrh was built in 1231; it bears Glagolitic inscriptions from 1463 and 1552. South of Vrh, the ruins of the Church of Saint Cyriacus preserve visible walls and an apse.

Cuisine

The Karlić family's truffle-hunting experience includes a tour of a truffle museum, a search with a licensed truffle hunter and trained dogs, as well as local wine with homemade dishes. A truffle hunt near Šćulci includes a visit to the Karlić family and a search with trained dogs.

During Carnival, Plenke were part of the local tradition of Šćulci: fried dough sprinkled with coarse sugar. A woman originally from nearby Šćulci has been making Kroštule in Vrh for 54 years.
