Rakalj is associated with the writer and economist Mijo Mirković, known as Mate Balota. His birthplace houses an ethnographic memorial collection presenting his life, literary work, Istrian heritage, and the pottery tradition. The permanent presentation of the Mijo Mirković Mate Balota Memorial Collection uses ethnographic material, photographs, personal belongings, documents, and audio recordings to portray Mijo Mirković’s creative life.
Culture and History
The collection can be visited by prior telephone appointment. Nearby Stari Rakalj, east of present-day Rakalj above Cape St. Nicholas, preserves the remains of a prehistoric hillfort, a Roman fortification, a medieval castle, defensive towers and guard posts, as well as the preserved 15th-century Church of St. Agnes. Stari Rakalj is a multi-layered archaeological site near Rakalj and is listed under number Z-1764 in the Croatian Register of Cultural Properties.
Nature and Trails
The Stjepan Hauser Trail is described as a 3.3-kilometre route in each direction. The walking time is approximately one hour each way, and the difficulty level is easy. The trail offers views of Istrian bays and access to hidden beaches, accompanied by the scents of juniper, sage, and immortelle.
The St. Agnes viewpoint near Stari Rakalj can be reached from Rakalj in the direction of Cape St. Nicholas via an approximately two-kilometre path through Mediterranean maquis and along dry-stone walls. From the viewpoint, there are views towards Raša Bay, Labinština, and Kvarner.
Luka Rakalj Beach is described as a natural, secluded pebble and rocky beach accessible by boat or via a footpath.
