Municipality of Medulin: Archaeology, Nature and Beaches

The municipality includes four protected areas. One of them is Donji Kamenjak and the Medulin Archipelago. Other attractions described here range from archaeological sites and historic places to cycling and walking trails. This means you can tailor your trip to different interests without limiting the options to a single theme.

The Vižula Peninsula lies in the heart of Medulin and is home to the multimedia Vižula Archaeological Park. Archaeological traces on the peninsula span the Neolithic period, Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, and cover 26 hectares. Visitors can also attend a school of archaeology in the park. Its facilities also include information boards in Braille and a circular tactile map.

In Banjole, the Park of the History of the Municipality of Medulin presents the history of the Medulin Riviera from prehistory to the present day as an open-air museum and gallery. It provides information in Braille and audio interpretations for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, as well as blind and visually impaired visitors. Those interested in ancient quarries can visit Cave Romane in Vinkuran, where stone was quarried as far back as Roman times, including for the construction of the Pula Arena. Today, its steep rock faces serve as an acoustic stage for numerous concerts.

Gornji Kamenjak is a protected landscape where 487 different plant species grow. The Gornji Kamenjak viewpoint trail starts at the car park at the entrance to Premantura. The trail is eight kilometres long; allow about an hour and a half for the walk. It passes a defensive bay built by the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War to protect Pula and its surroundings from the Italian army. Gornji Kamenjak also has the Gradina sensory and educational trail, adapted for blind and visually impaired visitors.

A walking trail on the Grakalovac Peninsula also leads to a site with fossilised dinosaur footprints in the Donji Kamenjak and Medulin Archipelago area. There are several routes to choose from for cycling: the Premanturka cycle path starts at the entrance to Premantura and runs over a small bridge near Šćuza to Pomer. The 315 Medulin Riviera cycle path starts and ends on the Medulin waterfront promenade. The Orhideja cycle path starts at a car park at the entrance to Premantura and heads towards the protected Kamenjak landscape.

In Školjić Bay, visitors can rent kayaks, explore the Medulin Archipelago, and try SUP and windsurfing. The one-kilometre-long sandy Bijeca Beach in Medulin attracts families with small children. In Premantura, Munte Beach is adapted for blind visitors and people with reduced mobility: a ramp and wide steps with a safety railing lead down to the sea.

The marina in Pomer has 250 berths in the water and 50 dry berths, as well as associated services. In summer, local residents organise a folk festival, and classical music concerts are held in Pomer’s churches. At Istarska Farma on Kamenjak, visitors can see donkeys, chickens, pheasants, ducks, parrots and Boškarin cattle. Its food offering includes homemade specialities made with fruit and vegetables grown on the farm or at neighbouring farms. It is open from late spring through summer.
