Trails

The Grdoselo–Zelengrad hiking trail is a 16-kilometre circular route. The Pazin–Grdoselo–Veliki slap hiking route reaches Veliki slap just over 1 kilometre from a marked fork in the trail and then continues to a second waterfall. The Staza vodopada (614) leads to Grdoselo and reaches a waterfall after leaving the village by the church. The Grdoselo–Zelengrad hiking trail offers panoramic views of the Pazin basin, Učka, Ćićarija, Grdoselo and Lake Butoniga. Nature

The Grdoselski-potok Canyon contains rapids, lakes, the remains of old mills and smaller waterfalls, including Črni puč. The canyon trail is not marked or secured; in wet conditions, it can be extremely slippery. Pećina Waterfall is almost 20 metres high and falls over the opening of a cave containing a spring.

History

Zelengrad was a trapezoidal fortress on a hill; below this hill, the Grdoselo stream flows into the Butoniga stream. Zelengrad is an abandoned medieval town first mentioned in 1102. The castle of Grdoselo was not rebuilt and has since been called Stari grad. The ruins of the Church of St. Anne were one of three churches in the Old Town/Zelengrad, the former settlement located about 800 metres north of present-day Grdoselo.

Culture

The parish church of the Name of Mary in Grdoselo dates from 1774 and preserves the Grdoselo Fragment, a Glagolitic cultural heritage artefact from the 12th century. It was found among the ruins of the nearby Church of St. Anne. The Grdoselo Chronicle is a manuscript from the parish archives of Grdoselo, begun by the local chaplain Vincent Pikot in 1688. It contains Vincent Pikot's account of the founding and construction of Grdoselo's present-day parish church.
