Babina: Hotels and Accommodations

Babina is a natural harbor on the relatively shallow and easily accessible northern coast of Korčula. A pebble beach is located in the heart of the bay; tamarisk bushes and olive trees near the shore provide deep shade. The natural harbor is protected from southerly and easterly winds. The surrounding coast of Blato is sparsely developed, lined with olive groves, and offers views of Hvar, the Pelješac Peninsula, and Biokovo.

Babina is one of the bays on Blato’s northern coast. This stretch of coastline extends from Babina in the east to Sprtiška in the west. Babina and the other bays on Blato’s northern coast are connected to Blato by paved roads.

Activities

A marked 30 km cycling route called Equator leads from Blato via Mala Kapja and Babina back to Blato. Blato’s cycling network comprises more than 140 km of marked and mapped routes. On its route toward Babina, the Equator trail reaches the sea and olive groves; it also passes stone terraces that cover most of the island’s hills. Near the route toward Babina lies Krtinjica, a small pond inhabited by Gambuzi fish.

The municipality of Blato has more than 40 km of hiking trails, including leisurely paths by the sea, through small bays, and through pine forests. Mala Kapja is nearby, an agricultural estate on the main island road from Blato to Korčula. There, visitors can see cattle, feed them, and ride horses.

History and Culture

Babina was once a fishing village large enough to have its own school. Marija of Jesus Crucified Petković attended this former school.

Culinary Specialties from Blato

In the regional context of Blato, Kumpanjol is a dessert inspired by the traditional island sword dance and sold as a souvenir cookie. Blatska torta was created in Blato using ingredients from the traditional recipe for Lumblija.
