Bakar: Hotels and Accommodation

Bakar reveals its history directly in the old town and by the water. Bakar’s cultural heritage includes attractions such as Frankopan Castle, the Church of St. Andrew, the Turkish House, the old streets and a coastal promenade. Culture and History

Frankopan Castle is located at the highest point of the old town and houses a small interpretation centre. With prior notice, visitors can tour the catacombs of the Church of St. Andrew. In Banj Park on Bakar’s coast is “Nets of Memory”, an outdoor educational exhibition about the city’s tuna-fishing tradition. The Church of St. Margaret contains a painting of Saint Margaret, considered the most accomplished work by the Slovenian painter Valentin Metzinger.

The Roman House is a Neorenaissance-style building near Frankopan Castle and the Church of St. Andrew; it features a luxurious veranda and vaulted ceilings. The Church of Our Lady of Port was formerly a votive shrine for the region’s sailors. At Žal ribara in front of the Church of St. Margaret stands a replica of a historic tuna-fishing observation post. Bakar’s old stone measures for salt and grain stand in the square where maritime and commercial exchange once took place.

The Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1764 and reverses the usual orientation of a Catholic church: the entrance faces east and the altar faces west. Next to Jaz stands a replica of the “Povelja Marije Terezije”, dated 23 April 1779. It commemorates Bakar’s designation as a free royal city. Perilo next to Jaz is a former washhouse that has remained visible on Bakar’s shore. Guided tours of Bakar can be arranged through the city’s tourist office.

Paths and Routes

The Pontonac pontoon promenade leads into Bakar Bay and offers views across the water of Bakar’s old town. A themed promenade in Bakar follows a local stream through greenery to the top of the old town near the castle. The Tragovima Frankopana cycling route runs along the shore of Bakar Bay. Visitors can follow a tourist map of Bakar’s public fountains, locally called “špine”, which includes short explanatory texts.

Water

Bakar has taxi-boat and rent-a-boat services for exploring Bakar Bay and the Kvarner Archipelago. The Jaz freshwater spring reaches the sea beside Bakar’s shore.

Surroundings

In the area around Plase, the Stari žar japnenica themed interpretation trail explains the tradition of lime burning in this area via a forest path and information panels.
