Nature

After heavy rainfall or snowmelt, a karst lake more than 20 metres deep can form in Ponikve. Following a longer period of rain, treetops may emerge from the water of Ponikve’s temporary karst lake.

Trails

The Kukuljanovo–Gradina–Ponikve–Kukuljanovo educational trail is 8.5 kilometres long. The Ponikve educational trail has two starting points and highlights the endemic Entire-Petalled Gorse.

The circular Ponikve promenade around the lake “Now you see me, now you don’t” features information panels about the area’s natural heritage. The Ponikve route leads to the remains of an Illyrian fortress at Gradina, which overlooks the surrounding settlements and the Bay of Bakar.

Fulfinum Mirine and Fulfinum Forum are located in the wider regional area surrounding Ponikve. Maltempo Fortress is located in the area surrounding Ponikve.

Cycling

The “Viewpoints of Bakar’s hinterland” MTB loop leads downhill to Ponikve and then ends in Škrljevo.
