Kuželj: Hotels and Accommodation

Kuželj connects the river landscape along the Kupa with paths through the surrounding terrain and historic buildings. Around the village, the destinations described range from a 40-kilometre section of the Gorski Kotar Cycling Trail to viewpoints, forest paths and a bridge chapel.

Nature and River Landscape

A bridge above Kuželjsko okno offers views over the Kolpa Valley and the peaks of Gorski Kotar. The nearby Kuželjska Stena cliff is a nesting site in Slovenia for the rare and endangered peregrine falcon and the rare and endangered golden eagle.

The upper Kupa Valley, including the section of the Gorski Kotar Cycling Trail that runs through Kuželj, is described as a preserved environment that supports more than 100 species of diurnal butterflies; it is often nicknamed the “Butterfly Valley”.

The Bjelica stream flows into the Kupa at Kuželj and passes under the Savkin Bridge. A gravel road follows the Bjelica upstream and continues through the forest.

Cycling along the Kupa

The 40-kilometre Brod na Kupi–Tršće section of the Gorski Kotar Cycling Trail follows the upper Kupa and passes through the hamlets of Kuželj, Gašparci and Turke. Along the route there are also rapids and beaches suitable for swimming.

Hiking

The Kostel Mountain Trail is a 19.1-kilometre circular hiking trail primarily intended for full-day hikes. It is classified as moderately difficult and has 880 metres of ascent. One variant of this trail follows the road through Kuželj.

During its first 16.2-kilometre section, the Jelen Trail follows the Kupa upstream through Kuželj. The trail also includes viewpoints looking towards the Kupa Valley and the Republic of Slovenia.

Culture and History

The chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the bridge in Kuželj. While the parish church was being expanded, Mass was celebrated in the bridge chapel in 1874.

In 2023, the chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was commemorated on the 160th anniversary of its construction. For this anniversary, it was restored inside and out.

The bridge over the Belica in Kuželj was also commemorated in 2023 on the 160th anniversary of its construction. At this anniversary, the restoration of the Belica Bridge in the previous year was attributed to the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Roads Administration.
