Culture and History

Mali Ston is listed as a registered settlement. The parish church of Saint Anthony the Abbot was built between 1309 and 1394. Its defensive heritage includes Koruna Fortress, the connecting Great Wall toward Podzvizd, fortified city walls, harbor gates, and the 14th-century church.

Koruna was one of the three main defensive fortresses in the Great Wall system. The Great Wall extends from Koruna Fortress in Mali Ston, has a branch leading to Podzvizd, and is 5.5 kilometers long. Mali Ston was planned as a fortified point with a harbor, arsenal, shipyard, and defensive installation. The harbor was built in the 15th century modeled on Dubrovnik’s old city harbor.

Nature

Mali Ston Bay has been protected as a special marine reserve since 1983. It is considered a designated special marine reserve with a preserved environmental system and is connected to the Natura 2000 site HR4000015. The cleanliness and temperature of the sea, the freshwater inflow, and the depth of the bay support shellfish farming.

Getting Around

The Walls of Ston have an entrance in Mali Ston at Koruna Fortress; from there, visitors can walk along the Great Wall to the Barabanata Tower. A route for pedestrians leads from Ston to Mali Ston via the walls or a promenade. Kayaking through Mali Ston Bay is described as an opportunity to experience its natural and cultural heritage. Mali Ston also has coves and beaches for swimming.
