Ston: Hotels and accommodations

Ston's fortification complex stretches for 5.5 kilometres and includes the walls of Ston and Mali Ston, the Great Wall, 41 towers and six bastions. The walls can be walked along, with views extending across the surrounding landscape to the salt pans and Stonsko Polje. History

The medieval town of Ston spread across the southern slopes of Sveti Mihajlo. While Ston was part of the Republic of Dubrovnik, it was the second-largest town after Dubrovnik. Knežev dvor in Ston is listed as a preventively protected immovable cultural asset.

The St Nicholas Church and the monastery complex in Ston were built between 1359 and 1393. The church is a late Romanesque building, while the monastery dates from the 15th century. The St Nicholas Church houses a large painted wooden crucifix created by Blaž Jurjev in 1420.

The nearby St. Michael Church preserves some of the oldest frescoes in the area. It is believed to have been a palace chapel in the complex of the Rector's Palace. It is also described as one of the most valuable early medieval monuments.

Culture

DVOR is a visitor centre in Ston dedicated to presenting the cultural and natural heritage of the Adriatic, with a particular focus on Pelješac. It offers an interactive exhibition about the culture and history of the Adriatic that uses modern technology and interactive elements. The exhibition also presents the Adriatic's maritime tradition and the gastronomic heritage of the Pelješac area.

Nature

The cultural landscape of Ston combines the town, the connecting walls, Stonsko Polje, the salt pans and the nature reserve of Mali Ston Bay. The bay provides a habitat for marine life and is used for shellfish farming.

Getting around

Napoleonova cesta begins next to the salt pans of Ston and runs for seven kilometres to Ponikve. The route has a moderate incline and is suitable for hiking or cycling.

Food and drink

Saltworks Ston preserves a traditional production method in which the sun, sea, wind and human labour work together to produce ecological salt and Fleur de Sel. Visitors can choose between a visit including a film about salt harvesting and an explanation of salt production and the history of the salt pans. Near Ston, the Malostonska oyster was the first Croatian marine product to be protected by an EU designation of origin in 2019.
