Konjevrate: Hotels and Accommodations

Culture

The Church of St. John the Baptist stands in Konjevrate, a building constructed in several phases. Restoration work identified a pre-Romanesque phase dating from the 9th century and a later Romanesque adaptation with a bell tower from the 12th or 13th century. The present form of the church incorporates the earlier walls. The interior contains Baroque altars, a Venetian silver processional cross from the 18th century, and a painting of John the Baptist from the 19th century. The parish church of St. John the Baptist stands on a small hill near the road intersections leading toward Drniš and Unešić. During archaeological and conservation investigations of the church, six pre-Romanesque relief fragments were found there in 2003. The older church building, which is incorporated into the present church, has a Romanesque main portal dating from no later than the 13th century.

Archaeology and History

Immediately beside St. John's Church, at the present-day cemetery, lies the Early Neolithic archaeological site. The pottery from the site belongs to the Impressed Ware culture. Konjevrate is documented in late medieval and early modern records under the historical name Koljevrate.

Konjevrate is home to the first researched open-air Paleolithic site identified on the eastern Adriatic coast. Thousands of fragments of tools and weapons made of flint were found there. People lived in Konjevrate approximately between 15,000 and 10,000 BC. A stone slab tomb monument is also preserved near St. John's Church.
