Donji Lepuri: Hotels and Accommodation
Donji Lepuri reveals two distinct aspects of the area: a multifaceted cultural history centred around the Church of St Martin and today’s olive growing.
Culture
The Church of St Martin is located in Lepuri, within a Catholic cemetery with a long chronological continuity. The building was restored in the 17th and 18th centuries and erected on the remains of a structure from the pre-Romanesque period and the early Late Antiquity.
Numerous high-quality pre-Romanesque stone carvings and epigraphic remains were discovered in the walls of the Church of St Martin. Fragments of Early Christian architectural sculpture date from the 5th to the 6th century. Archaeological investigations also uncovered the ruins of an Early Christian church into which a medieval church had been incorporated.
Single-nave chapels were probably built beside the Early Christian church, presumably after its construction in the early Middle Ages, in the 9th century. Early Christian and pre-Romanesque fragments of architectural decoration and liturgical furnishings were documented near the Church of St Martin in Lepuri and studied in connection with 9th-century stone-working workshops; the site is described as one of the largest pre-Romanesque sites discovered in Dalmatia after the Second World War.
The former Church of St Martin stood directly on the Benkovac–Skradin road. The new Church of St Martin in Lepuri was solemnly blessed on 11 November 2001.
The ZaviÄajni muzej Benkovac is housed in KaÅ¡tel Benković, a protected 15th-century building designated as an individual immovable cultural asset of national importance. For groups, the museum offers expert-guided tours of the museum in KaÅ¡tel Benković.
